The creation of a perishable handling facility for national airline carrier at Heathrow.
Project Background:
A UK national airline was looking at growth strategies and ways they could gain commercially from the explosive growth and increased imports of fresh and perishable goods. Omnia worked alongside this airline and project managed the design and build of its own perishable goods handling facility at Heathrow.
Project Challenge:
The project was to support the airline’s growth and expansion strategies within perishable goods sector.
Omnia Solution:
Working as a project consultant, Omnia successfully project managed the design and build of a 70,000 sq ft facility based at Heathrow. The facility is used for the handling and distribution of imported perishable goods arriving into the UK. This project was unique in that this is the first time a major airline decided to build its own bespoke handling facility as an expansion strategy.
Project Outcome:
The facility has been successfully operating for over 10 years. The financial impact to the airline has been significant; within the first 3 years of operation the facility increased it’s handling from 29,000 tons to 60,000 tons. The airline continues to benefit from the facility.
