Project management for the design and build of a new Border Inspection Post at London Heathrow
Project Background:
DEFRA (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is responsible for maintaining Great Britain’s animal and public health status, the Government has put in place various measures and legislation to ensure that businesses and individuals are able to export animals and products by providing health guarantees to importing countries, normally by way of export health certification, which in turn is supported by an network of inspection posts and major airports.
Working in conjunction with BAA & operating airline BA and representatives from the EU communion, Omnia helped coordinate the creation of an Inspection Post at Heathrow for the inspection of imported products of animal origin fit for human and non human consumption.
Project Challenge:
To design and project manage the building of a Border Inspection Post that would adhere to EU Criteria and import legislation and guidelines.
Omnia Solution:
Omnia acted as Chair and Project Manager, liaising with all stakeholders including, Customs & Excise, DEFRA, Freight Forwarding Companies and Operating Airlines. Key areas of activity included:
Providing expert advice and guidance on the proposed design, location and layout of the new inspection building.
Implementing the necessary processes for the inspection building as well as producing the relevant paperwork and documentation.
Project Outcome:
Omnia’s considered and meticulous handling of this project means that Heathrow now has a state of the art inspection facility specifically built for the inspection of imported animal products. The building has been used as a working example, its format, processes and documentation having been adopted across other inspection posts worldwide.
