Creation of a Brand New Logistics Hub & Cold Storage Facility in Jamaica
Project Background:
The team at Omnia recognised an opportunity to support one of South America’s major fresh produce suppliers. They were struggling to sustain viable pricing and make margins that would sustain their business and any future growth in the fresh fruit market. The reasons for this being attributed to having to use US as their trans-shipment point. The impact of the increased security and delays at US airports as well as increasing fuel costs was creating time delays and increased costs that were severely eroding their profit margins.
Project Challenge:
To create an alternative, viable and sustainable distribution and cold storage facility for this South American fresh produce supplier.
Omnia’s Solution:
The Omnia Solution Working in partnership with Air Jamaica and a major fresh produce supplier based in the UK Omnia suggested using Kingston in Jamaica as a trans-shipment hub for the South American Growers.
Geographically Jamaica was better suited as a shipment route for this market. To support this solution Omnia were instrumental in designing and building a state of the art cold storage facility at Kingston Airport. The implementation of this facility not only increased cargo loads for Air Jamaica it also gave local growers and suppliers the opportunity to export their produce more cost effectively.
Project Outcome:
The impact of the cold storage facility has been significant. It has opened up a new supply chain within Jamaica as well as opening up a new and more cost effective route for South American growers. The facility has also been recognised by local government in its contribution to the island’s economic development in creating a sustainable market for new and existing growers of fresh produce.
