Development & Creation of an Agricultural Food Production Centre in Malaysia

Project Background:

This project was carried out on behalf of the Government of Malaysia. The Government was concerned with the organisation and efficiency of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Industry and required a full evaluation to be carried out.

Project Challenge:

To review the current arrangements for the post-harvest handling, collection, and sale of fresh fruits and vegetables in Malaysia.

To propose changes to the fresh produce supply chain to reduce waste and provide a fairer return to the growers   

To determine the requirement of local retailers and supermarkets for locally grown produce and provide a mechanism to satisfy these requirements

To scope the potential for added value fresh fruits and vegetables.

Omina’s Solution:

Full assessment of the existing supply chain and the potential market within the fresh fruit and vegetable sector

Carried out a detailed feasibility study on the creation and development of regional packing centres as well as the associated logistics and distribution services.

Reviewed the role of the wholesaler within the supply chain and provided recommendations for improving efficiency

Project Outcome:

Omnia provided the client with a fully “costed” model for the creation of a vertically integrated supply chain for the fresh fruits and vegetables sector in Malaysia.

The model also provided for a staged approach for change with improved returns to the growers and supply of better quality produce to the consumer the key elements of the plan.

The Proposal was accepted in its entirety by the clients who went on to implement the majority of the proposals put forward.
