Crop & Post Harvest Management for Vegetable Dehydration Project in Pakistan
Project Background:
Working with the Commonwealth Secretariat Omnia where engaged to work on a project to establish a new Vegetable Dehydration Plant in North-west Frontier Province in Pakistan.
This project was established in response to a requirement for a regular supply of good quality vegetables in a region where there were significant problems in obtaining year round availability of fresh product.
Project Challenge:
The operation of a dehydration plant requires a regular supply of good quality vegetables in order to operate efficiently and effectively. Omnia was tasked to establish sustainable procurement plans which included planning the growing, post-harvest handling, and pricing structure for selected vegetables.
Omnia Solution:
They provided the following services:
Identifying and preparing crop schedules for the proposed produce. This included providing a full specification of soil conditions, sowing/planting programmes, fertilisers and crop protection.
Implementing standardised quality and size specifications for the target produce.
Determine purchasing procedures with local farmers.
Producing outline contracts with local farmers.
Evaluate current constraints in existing supply chain particularly among distributors of raw materials to the dehydration plant.
Project Outcome:
The plant was built over a period of 6 months by which time effective procurement plans had been established and the operation was able to start on time with good supplies of the targeted vegetables.
